China Committee Meeting #1

For those of you have been unable to attend our past two meetings, we have since decided, with encouragement from Dr. Bai to plan a trip to China for Spring Break.



As it is last minute, if you are interested in going, please contact the board as soon as possible. The deadline to let us know if you are going or not is February 1st. You should also get started on the passport process, as that may take quite some time.

China Committee Meeting#1/Board Meeting

3:40pm
Announcement: $118.00 was raised at today’s bake sale!

3:41pm
New up and coming club: “Society of Student Historians @ CSULA”
-introduced to Eddie, president of club
-we can collaborate on events
-volunteering is very important

3:43pm
Sign-in sheet going around…
-put a star by your name, if you’re interested in going to China.
-if not, sign in anyway so we know who’s on the committee to help plan

3:44pm
Jose is writing a letter to NCA and CSI to see if we can go as a group or if we have to go by ourselves as students, due to:
-insurance purposes, legal reasons, etc
-the letter should be ready to send out on Friday

3:46pm
Michelle- working on letter to corporations for funding.
-work on corporate sponsorships
-do we want to include sponsorship for both China and LPE or ask separately?
-ask for funding for LPE for a later time, ask for China first.

3:48pm
China trip:
-Funding-we need to work on this the next few weeks!
-visas and passports, you need to get right now! It’s expensive and the application process takes time.
-Melissa T. is volunteering to help us book this trip because she has planned trips before.
-it is agreed by all present in the meeting that funding will be asked for as a group instead of individually.

For the Corporate sponsorships:
-what do we want to/are willing to do for the corporations? Wear t-shirts, feature in our grad program…
-We vote to include in the program-we must be specific on how much space we will allot them based on $ contribution
-We need to prepare a packet that we can take or mail to businesses that shows what we offer them if they fund us.

The Letter:
-WHY? (written on the board to generate ideas)
-why do we want to go to China?
-what do we want to tell corporations?
-why are we going?
1) community service
2) to apply what we are learning
3) the very 1st international LPE was founded at University of Beijing—good pointer Alyssa!
4) global /intercultural experience
5) exploring a different culture other than our own
-We need a corporate letter!!!

Melissa T:
-knows of a travel company that specializes in student travel-we only get a discount if we are attached to the university, she thinks
-passport must be valid from up to 6 months after the trip ~ 9/19th
-we need about 20 people so we can book 10 rooms- 2 per room- to get group rate
-Melissa: will get quotes on what can we get
-deadline: feb.1st have an agency/quotes

-we need to know who's really committed...
- we need to know if we're going as LPE which means you have to be a student, which affects who else can go.
*Deadline: if you’re going or not: 2/1

-Travel agency deadline: ???
-Melissa wants to get the pricing first which depends on what rate we would get which in effect will effect how many people will go.

As a board we will take care of the legalities:
-NCA and CSI—Jose is drafting a letter
-we need someone to work on the corporate letter.:
-Michelle will work on... need help!
-Josh, Sarah, and Anthony are down…a sign in sheet for the Letter-Writing Committee is circulating.
-The letter needs to include who LPE is, why we want to go, why they should sponsor us, how this will benefit us personally and contribute to the betterment of society as a whole
-Alyssa will research on international LPE in Beijing
-Melissa T. working on travel agency and pricing
-online donation: who can do that?—Elizabet volunteers

4:10pm
When do we want to go: September or spring break?
-Visas needed at least one month before, says Melissa who can help us get as soon as we have our passport.
-Melissa: Can you look up dates for June, as well as September, and of course spring break?

4:12pm
Recruitment Packs:
-Jewlz is putting these together and will have them done by this weekend.
-they will include: calendars, what LPE is, why you should join, tools to help you get up in your class to speak about LPE for recruitment.

4:13pm
New Event added to the calendar, which Jewlz will finalize for:
-March 10th, 615pm-9pm: comm150 classes will be competing on speeches
-the preliminaries are @ 615pm
-the finals are @ 745pm
-We need to figure out something to during the time that judges are deciding…
-skits or some type of performance are suggested.

4:15pm
When does this committee want to meet again?
-we will have to meet more frequently since we are short on time
-can you all make it at this same time, 3:20ish, this Thursday? It is agreed so.
-Location not set, meet up in mus_108, we’ll see from there…

3:36pm
LPE calendar passed out and discussed:
-Health center guest speaker at the next general meeting on health services
-Hot stuff bake sale on January 25th
-General meeting
-Hot stuff bake sale
-General meeting w/ guest speaker from U-lead on recruitment which will be KEY this quarter, to get an idea how many members we will have at the graduation.
-Shakey’s fundraiser, last time we raised $55.00
-Rock the stress away, final qtr event

3:42pm
-Honorary member” option if you do not meet the GPA requirements
- Even non-member comm. Graduates can participate.

3:45pm
-Is any one available for a bake sale on Tuesday the 11th from 11am-3pm? Or should we simply eliminate it? Members raise hands to vote-- majority rules—Bake sale!

3:46pm
-Recruitment is KEY this quarter.
-Mention it in class and invite them to come to our communication club
-Facebook
-Word of mouth, lets use our communication skills!

3:47pm:
China Trip, as suggested by Dr. Bai
-visit China on spring break
- About $1,200.00 (includes airfare-round trip, food, and hotel
- Outreach trip: community service event while we are there.
-We’ve raised about $1050.00 and we started with $80.00
-We need a committee to plan China trip—if u can pull this off, it will look great on our resume for grad school or work, according to Bai
-would it be best after graduation, as a graduation trip, or spring break?

Corporate funding:
-We need a committee to work and plan this trip.
-Jewel City Bowling to raise money, was successful when Savannah did this
-We need a template letter to send to corporations for sponsorships, there are different levels of sponsorships…we can wear/sport a corporation, disburse items of the corporation at school or on our trip, etc...

For the spring quarter:
-beach clean up event, followed by a BBQ
-there’s a volunteer opportunity to help at risk youth at LAUSD
-maybe we can all do a sports day with kids in an LAUSD after school program.
-volunteer opportunities are needed for spring
-a member who tutors has a list of local LAUSD schools that need volunteers

4:02pm:
Initiation ceremony: rock the stress away or at Shakey’s:
-members vote-
-rock the stress is voted as choice

4:05pm:
Board introduction and member introduction
-member asks: what does it take to become a member?
-Lifetime membership-$40.oo for national recognition and cords
-Honorary graduates get a special cord even though they don’t meet GPA requirements-$10.00
-Checks payable to LPE or cash-- see Melisa
-Honorary members get a separate cord and an award -$10.00
-Honorary members can participate, active membership, but are not nationally recognized

Welcome Back: Meeting #5

Hey People! Welcome back to school for Winter Quarter 2011! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday break!

To start off this quarter, Lambda Pi Eta will be having its first general meeting on:
